How-to books. No, I'm not being snarky. You can get all the toys the cool kids have, but if you don't know how to use them, it won't amount to anything.

Learn what you need for what you want to acheive, get a basic idea about thow to use it, then look into gear.

You will save thousands in the long run.
 
i'd go for a 50mm f/1.8, they're so cheap and opened up my camera so much more for me when i was just starting out. :)
 
I've been getting a couple books from the library, some are nice, others not so much. But I am learning a bunch of different angles and tips from a lot of them!

I'm googling a 50mm f/1.8 lens now, thanks for the suggestion!
