Woke up very early in the small California coastal town of San Simeon. Fog was thick and socked in, my hopes for sunrise were dim. Decided to take 46 up and get above the fog. Had some grand views and nice light.

What were you trying to shoot for sunrise?

I think it may always be foggy in San Simeon. I went to the Hearst Castle a few years ago and the fog was dense as cotton when we got there.

Didn't have anything particular in mind. Was just hoping to get out and get some coastal stuff.

I heard Hearst is beautiful. What did you think of it?

Cool. Since I've never left the east coast, I've never actually seen hills like that.

It is that! Opulence on a grand scale. I think there are 5 different tours, so I only saw a small portion of the overall estate. What I saw was amazing to a simple person like me. Perhaps not so much to those accustomed to California wealth, but to me it was amazing. Single rooms larger than my entire house, gold-plated faucets in the bathrooms, Italian marble everywhere. Simply amazing.

That sounds ridiculous and fun to see. My cousin was at the wedding I went to and they are planning on going to see it. Sounds awesome.

It's definitely worth seeing. They have a web site Here. The tour we took went through a portion (a small portion!) of the North Wing and one of the guest houses. The castle itself contains 60,000 square feet and the other buildings 30,000 square feet. It's hard to comprehend a 60,000 square foot home until you've actually seen one. Absolutely amazing is all I can say.
