In the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey Dr. Hayward Floyd takes a Pan-Am Space Plane to the Moon so he can then take a shuttle to visit Clavius Base so he can look at the monolith that had been buried there. Clavius is in the South photo.
Astrophotographers making really sharp images of the moon are stacking 400 to 1000 photos made at shutter speeds lasting about 25 ms (1/40) per shot.
I made 1 of each of these.
South was @ 1/50, ISO 200, f/9.8, 3000 mm.
North was @ 1/40, ISO 200, f/9.8, 3000 mm. Clouds were starting to form in front of the Moon so I needed 1/3 stop more exposure.
North, with some of the features labeled (click to see a somewhat larger image).
South, with some of the features labeled. Note we can look straight down into Hell (click to see a somewhat larger image).
