I think the OP is great. I would only make a slight change with the composition. I would take the sliced piece and put it skin side down so it looks like a "D" rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

Does that poor description make sense?

Interesting idea. The curve of the skin would tend to, I dunno, "close off" the frame cleanly on the lower right side? I get what you're saying, good idea!

ceeboy14, thanks for your input and edit! Can you put in to words why you think it would be better, brighter? Not everything can be put in to words, so I understand if it's just an unexplainable gut feeling.

I think you lost too much of the skin's texture with the darker tones. Peaches are soft and fuzzy and I didn't get that sense from your edit.

I like the idea and I'm OK with the original brightness, but the abrupt transition to black on the right-hand peach bothers me. It may be real, e.g., if that peach is partially submerged, but it just doesn't work for me. A gradual fade to black, as on the skin of the left-hand one, would look better, imo.

In the edit, the detail of the fruit flesh lost its detail and is made to look more like an apple than a peach. :meh:

The round peach looks almost "lunar"...both in shape, and also in the way it appears to "float in blackness". Seriously...something in the gestalt of that says "moon" to me. Playing off of that, perhaps it'd look nifty to re-position the slice in an almost crescent moon-like position, in the upper right hand side area??? Overall, I'm not sure if I like the floating in blackness vibe. One one hand, it's kind of enjoyable to experience a bit of visual disorientation from such a simple scene. OTOH, it's also just...a bit well,weird... Right now I am going back and forth on the shot.

I don't normally like it, and its wicked cliche but I would like to see the color inside while keeping the B&W outside.

Also some lens flare.

Derrel has it in a nutshell. This is a while back, but I think it was an experiment in the vein of Weston, the "single item on a black background" still life thing, with a single softbox (?) and no fill of any sort, for drama.

Then I starting banging around and by over-sharpening I got this wild astronomical look and just went with it. Pushed the background totally flat, lots of local contrast. I didn't *shoot* it to look planetary, so I have to chalk any success up in that direction to serendipity.

I could get by with the darkness of the peach skin.
What bothers me most is the shallow depth of field that leaves the front edge of the peach out of focus.
