People with Vivitar 285hv (emergency)

i have 3 newer 285HV and they work really well, my only complain is that i broke the cheap plastic hot shoe on both unit. I changed them for metal ones and NOW i trust them. Paid 10 bucks for 3 replacement metal shoe mount...

Can I ask where? I broke the hot-shoe on one of my 285's a few months back and haven't looked into replacing it...but I want to eventually.

And now that BOTH my SB-600's are fried...I could really use that 2nd 285HV lol (BTW, 1/1 power & mid-day sun is BAD for SB-600's...mmmkay?)

IIRC eBay is the source for 285HV metal replacement feet. 285HV replacement foot | eBay

IIRC the 285 has 4 wires but the replacement foot only has 2 contacts, so solder the white+ to the green wire and isolated them together. Red goes on the center tab, and black on the side tab.

this is the one i used.


they are SOLID compared to the plastic OEM shoe.
they broke because i dropped the flashes mounted to stand and umbrella on concrete. I was walking towards my car to get my sandbags and they felt.
Lesson learned. Always secure your stands BEFORE mounting the flash and umbrella hahaha


you will need a small welding tool and a roll of small welding wire.

Oddly enough, mine broke the same way. On the stand, with umbrella, slight gust of wind (literally not more than a breath) took it all over and the flash shoe was no more.

Anyway, sorry to derail the thread...but...yeah lol

I think they did go up. at 20 $ its still cheap to fix up 3 flash and improve them.

Keith, you never cease to amaze me.

I've since bought 2 25lb. sandbags for my stands (the day after it happened), but...the 25 pounders are too heavy for my boom in certain situations and THESE would fit the bill nicely, and cheaper than the "real" boom weights lol
