So my boss knows that I'm getting into the whole photography thing and asked me to photograph his kids baseball team while they practice next week at the indoor batting cage.

I've been doing some reading about sports photography and seems like you need a very fast and expensive lense. Is it possible to get good shots with my current set up which is the basic Canon Rebel XS Kit with the EF-S 18-55mm zoom lens?

Simply put, no. That lens simply isn't fast enough to use indoors to freeze fast moving action.

That's what I figured. I told him that I probably wouldn't be able to get any good action shots shots because my lense isn't fast enough to use indoors. But I figured it would be good practice in general so I told him I will just focus on the other stuff.

The right move here is to tell your boss that at this time you don't have the necessary gear to shoot action shots indoors. You could maybe also inform him that a substantial raise would allow you to purchase the required lens. I'm just sayin...

haha yeah I already told him I don't have the the lense to shoot the action shots. he said that's fine and just wants me to just take random pictures of the kids with the instructors and then maybe he'll help me with getting a new lense. I guess its a win-win either way...gain experience shooting and maybe get a new expensive lense out of the deal

Have you considered renting a lens? It sounds like he might even be willing to pick up the tab. If you show him what you can do with the right equipment, maybe he'd be more prone to coughing out the money to help you buy one.

yeah I thought about it, but its only batting practice so i'm not really too concerned about it. I would rather do it for the games in the spring where the real action takes place if I were to do that. Plus I'm exremely new to this so I'm still learning the basics. He is the director of finance for our company...him coughing up the money isn't an issue haha
