Take a look at the Russion photographer Alexey Kljatov's snow crystals. Truly wonderful stuff.
Kljatov says he put the crystals on some dark wool, put the wool on a glass plate, and used LED lighting from underneath the glass plate for illumination. Sometimes he added natural light. If you scroll down, you will find a figure showing which combinations of air temperature and air moisture that lead to the snow crystals' shape.
