Just wondering if anyone has taken any affordable photography classes for beginners. Any recommendations? I'm in Rhode Island. Just want to expand my knowledge.

I love Creative Live. They have all levels and sometimes their classes go on sale. I recommend looking at the reviews before purchasing. If you want to take a class in person check out local camera shops or photography clubs in your area.

I've also watched a lot of YouTube videos. Some of my favorites are Adorama TV, Mark Wallace, Matt Granger, and Gregory Cazillo. YouTube is free!!

To bad you're not old. LOL Most states, ours included, offer free tuition to seniors over 60. Still you might check into local community colleges to see what's offered. A lot of schools offer "auditing" on a space available basis, where you don't get a grade or credit, but you can learn. Some photographers offer mentoring for a fee. Check out your local library for books on the subject. Lastly the internet has resources for about any question you might have.

Helpful, thank you!

There are some pretty good books on photography; maybe a few books from the local library would help you expand that knowledge base?

I am in the process of creating a free online photography course on youtube. I must admit I didn´t work on it for a while. But may I humbly recommend the first chapters of my course to get you started? My goal is to be straight and quick. There are many online courses out there for all sorts of activities - something many have in common is: the tutors talk quite a lot. It is sometimes entertaining, but for people with limited time it is hard to find classes that are straight to the point.

I'll add B&H to this list. They have a TON of long form (hour long or more) full classes on their YouTube channel. Really awesome stuff.

When I was a kid I took a number of photography courses at museums. When I look back on it now a lot of what we did was more about expressing ourselves with the camera and not anything real technical on using the camera (my first course was done using a Kodak Instamatic).

I am not sure what you consider affordable. What I learned was priceless as I have enjoyed so many years of photography from that time.

I would look at the Coleman Center at the Newport Art Museum, they have some photography classes, although it looks like their spring classes started last week. A bit more expensive is RISD Continuing Education, but they have a larger selection of courses.

I took a DSLR class at my local community college that was well worth the $99. Chelsea and Tony Northrup have some really great videos on Youtube as well. One of our members ( coastalconn ) is even featured in at least one of them. They have ebooks as well as printed, dvd's and videos you may purchase as well.
