Came across this video today and thought that it was terribly sad. it seems like they mistook the cameras for weapons and opened fire on a group of people when a van comes in to help the wounded they open fire on that killing several more people and wounding 2 children that were in the van.

Just a reminder to any war photographers on this site to be careful.

article and videos here:
Collateral Murder

I think that if you operate a ****in chopper gunner and shoot on people almost at will, you should be able to see the difference between a damnn rocket launcher and a camera. Its sad that too see that they can take lifes that easily based on such low standards, now what? heroes? **** no

Have you served in similar capacity?

Until you are in that situation... you can make a total of 0 assumptions. Its a life or death situation and mistakes do happen.

I certainly would have a difficult time determining if the person sneaking a look around the corner with the tip of their long zoom poking out is a RPG or a lens (see video). The media agency both were saddened but they also agreed that it is part of the dangers of the job.

I take offense when people see part of the story and yell "murder".

.. .and no... I don't condone War... We go into it way to often and often unjustified. But war is war... all journalists who cover the events should be prepared for the worst case.

I'd close this thread ...

+1

I served for 16 years in the Army. Friendly fire has killed and will kill and it's sad. Please lets not go pointing fingers at low standards of our now serving men and women. Sadly this is making the chopper gunner out to be a war mongering maniac. Darn it I better stop before I say any more too. To be honest I don't feel this thread is serving any purpose and is only going to cause angry debate. I would be happy if this thread was closed and just appreciate the story is sad and leave it at that.

Cheers
Jim

I am against the war (any which one) but as an ex war photographer I cannot help but agree with the above. It is part of the job. If you don't like it, do some other kind of photography.

I'm going to bite my tongue as well. Except to say unless you've been there, in that situation, STFU with your accusations about how this is the shooter's fault, especially considering the low standards of the thugs over there hiding behind women and children to kill innocent people.

And I won't bring up how ALL these journalists know what they're getting into when they WILLINGLY GO INTO THOSE SITUATIONS. :twak:

I'm going to bite my tongue as well.

So I lied. Shoot me.

Im not pointing fingers at anyone, I am just saying that it is terrible what happened and reminded those who may be in this sort of situation in the future to be careful. I support the troops if not the war.

I don't think most of these comments are directed at you. At least mine aren't. They are directed to this douche...
