Photos not proportional in Windows 8

It seems that I've asked some odd questions during my short time here on the fourm. So here is another :lmao:, hope this is the best place to post this.

I'm getting Lightroom 5, already ordered coming in wednesday. I'm still using XP but Lightroom won't work on it. A friend gave me a 5 year old or so HP computer that she had installed Windows 8 Pro. The problem I'm having is that in the photo viewer and in photoshop the photos are not proportional, they are stretched long ways. I know very little about Windows 8 (other than I don't like it at all) but have checked settings and have not found a setting to fix the proportions.

Help, any ideas of what is going on.

Check you video resolution. You are set to an obscure resolution for you monitor. If you can't correct it by changing resolution, you likely do not have the correct video drivers for your video card.

Check for the native resolution of your monitor

Yep - resolution, not the Windows version. I'm running Win8 with no problems (other than the usual Windows stuff)

Thanks guys. I hadn't thought of video card.
With XP about to be gone, I guess I'll be upgrading the whole system soon. For years now I've been running Photoshop and Illustrator, older versions, on XP. I guess the headaches are just beginning, and an empty wallet.
