Photoshop on Externall SSD and USB 3.0

I'm a bit too lazy to swap out my laptops hdd with a ssd, so I've been wondering if I'd see a performance boost installing PS on an external SSD connected via USB 3 and also keeping the image files on the SSD as well. Experiences?

Max out RAM, have plenty of scratch disk space, and the right graphics/video card.

I have two monster systems and still not satisfied with the performance. System 1: i7 haswell quad, 16 gb ram, gt 755 sli System 2: amd fx octo core, 16gb ballistic ram, Radeon 7870 Maybe I'm asking a bit much. The only thing left I can imagine is a ssd for install scratch and files.... Shrug

That's rather pointless seeing as your operating system is still running on the non SSD drive.

Not true. A SSD drive will give a performance boost on any thing that accesses the hard drive this includes applications and any file stores on the SSD.

Your too lazy to change hard drives but your willing to wait hours for people to respond to this post on a online forum.

You could have replace the drive and cloned the old one to the new in much less time then this post has been online.

in regards to PS, a SSD will only boost the startup time performance...it wont give you any gains while manipulating pixels.

I have noticed a big difference when working with large files. I shoot 4x5 film and my unedited scans are easily 1 gb in size. I have two internal hard drives a SSD and a regular one. I alway edit from the SSD because I have seen a difference in performance the biggest place you will notice a speed difference is in saving your files. Saving often is super important.

I use an ssd as my c drive and another as a scratch drive. Massive difference in speed from my previous hdd which was a 10,000 rpm WD Velociraptor.
