Pictures I took at family party

These are pictures I took at a family party of mine. I am still learning and these were actually taken a while ago before I got more experience with my camera. Pictures were taken with my canon 7D with the kit 28-135mm Macro lens.

These photos have not been retouched or processed at all. These are the pictures taken right from the camera.

I feel these are all pretty much just snapshots, technically good (sharp, in focus), but just lacking. Try getting down on their level when you're shooting people of shorter stature, also attempt to balance the lighting a little better.

Thanks. I'll try some other stuff out next time im at a family party. This was pretty much my first time doing shooting. It was all done by hand too. So it was a little tough being a beginner in low light with no flash

Is there any other advise to make my pictures better. Make them stand out more. So they don't look like snapshots? Any advise us greatly appreciated.

Photograph something other than family gatherings (find interesting subjects), or create the photos in such a way with lighting, colors, compositions, etc...so that they catch the eye and show a lot of deliberation.

Oops. These functions are tough, indoors, lots f people and cluttered backgrounds.

I try to stay back and isolate a facial expression without getting someone to pose.

Also, try to avoid shooting people when they have their hands covering their faces, or when they are sticking food into their mouths, or with food in their mouths. (Unless, that is, you're shooting your own kids for a family album - then pretty much anything goes.)

This is where I usually get my time to practice some new techniques. It is though. I will try and do some stuff different. None of them knew I was taking a picture in any of the shots I took.

Yeah I should give these pictures to my aunts and uncles of their kids since they will enjoy them.

I purchased a 70-200 f/2.8 L recently and haven't gotten a chance to use it yet at any functions. Hopefully the speed of the lens will help me with some shots to freeze them. A lot I have we're blurred a little bit so I didn't post them.
