Pictures with glowsticks

I dont know if I am explaining it right but, I was wondering how people take those pictures where it looks like the run everywhere with a glowstick. I have seen a few and think it would be fun to try. I was wondering if it is just a long exposure, and move quickly through the picture with a light so the camera picks that up and not your body. Or is it two overlapped pictures? I saw one that looked like a full body portrait and then the body was outlined in the bright light/glowstick. Not the best explination but hopefully its clear enough.

It's called light painting

Any time I've done it I've just used a long exposure.
