It was once said that when "God" had finished making all the animals he had a few parts left over so rather than throw them away he decided to use them and create a truly unique beast. He had the beak of a duck, the feet of an otter, the body and tail of a beaver, some left over brown fur, the fangs of a snake and the egg laying apparatus of a chicken. So he mixed them all together and this resulted in the Platypus.
A hairy aquatic mammal with the bill of a duck that lays eggs and suckles it's young and (in the males) possesses a venomous spur on his hind legs.
Shy and mainly nocturnal many Australians have never seen a live, let alone 'wild' Platypus but the resident population of my local river (2 females and 1 male) have become accustomed to my presence and are often active during the day.
Partly exposed on a semi submerged log in some late afternoon sun.
Close up of the very sensitive "bill".
Peeking out from under a grassy bank.
