Here are three pictures I took of my parrot. The first two are the same but with slightly different editing..I think the second has more "pop." The third is different..perhaps a bit blurry

I like the second as well, and the third one is out focus. It seems to have to much DOF

I feel like these are just shots you took standing at the same height to your parrot, with an in camera flash, on auto mode.

Theres nothing significant about the photo, the bird is in the center of the frame, and his feet are getting cut off by the stand somewhat.

Im presuming that your access to studio equipment is very limited, so I'd suggest moving the stand a considerable distance away from the wall, perhaps standing on a stool so you can look down at the bird instead of parallel to it. And get the entire bird in frame, while the background is black.

Maybe even tape a few layers of white kleenex over your in camera flash to 'diffuse' it to make the flash less harsh.

Thank you both for your input. Actually I was in manual mode trying different things. At one point I switched to aperture priority to get a handle on what shutter speed I should be using. I was also playing with manual focus it's not surprising I was off on that one. Yes, basically I put him on his stand and it's a small room. Yes, I noticed that too..the missing feet, that is definitely that I need to correct next time. In the third one it was cut off in the first two the thick pole was blocking his feet as he was on a perch that was attached to it. In terms of access to equipment, yes I only have the flash on my camera...no external flash, no softbox or other diffuser for it so something like tissues might be my best bet.
