Portrait Practice

My son actually sat down for me for 3 photos, of which this is the best one. The lighting was provided by a Nikon SB-24 hooked up strobist-style to my Olympus c-4000 and shot into a silver reflected umbrella and a white foam core board for bounce on the other side of him. The background was a white sheet and I edited in a background color and a gradient after the fact.

Critiques and/or tips for next time?

Nice focus on his eyes! Good job. The only thing I might suggest is to maybe just leave the white background and birghten it up a bit? It sort of looks bery obvious that the background here is faked btu I don't know if you maybe inteneded it to be that way, which I understand is sometimes the case, here though - He looks very separated from the background.

The background does look a little fakey, but I really like it here! You made the perfect color choice for it, in my opinion. If the background were white, I don't think I'd stop to look at this picture as easily, but as it is, it really catches my attention.
