Prevent Gear Loss

I am a water polo player and i have a weekend tournament coming up in a near by city. I just upgraded my body and general lens last week so i can't wait to take those out for a spin. however i am worried about getting my gear stolen because i will be staying in dorms with local university students. i can't bring my camera to the pool when im playing a game. should i just bring my back up body instead?

No chance of keeping it in your car, or a locked locker somewhere?

I personally would bring it, but then again, I have insurance on my gear so if it gets stolen it's not a HUGE disaster. If you do bring it, consider keeping it in a bag that doesn't look like a camera bag... perhaps just under the clothes in your suitcase or something.

State Farm covers my stuff for theft, damage, etc. and its very reasonably priced insurance.

There are bags and cable systems out there where you can lock both the bag and secure it to an item with a cable. It won't stop someone from stealing it, but it will make them go to more effort.

thanks for the info, i am definitely going to bring it because it's an awesome opportunity. if there are no lockers at all i'll just hide the whole thing in my duffel bag and zip it up during games., and i will lock my zippers with a small cable lock just to be on the safe side.

Insurance is definitely the way forward - if there's no lockers and your bag get's nicked (hopefully not, but you can never tell sadly) a few dozen $$ insurance will be a drop in the ocean compared to the multiple hundreds of $$ of gear you'll be losing...
