i'm shooting a grand march for prom this weekend with my nikon d40.
in case it's dim, what settings would work the best?

The settings that would allow you to get the exposure.

We can't suggest the settings because we don't know the light levels...you will have to use your camera's meter and your best judgement when the time comes.
