Actually, I think it has far more to do with the reason they hold a contrary position.

Not agreeing with the predominant view is fine, providing there's sound reasoning behind it. That doesn't make someone a troll. What makes someone a troll is when they disagree for no other reason than they want to be disagreeable...

The thing is people "see trolls" more than they are actually present. Indeed the term is often used as a "cry wolf" effect so that people can discredit another's position by brandishing them a troll instead of making counter arguments. Then there are a fair few injokes/comments made that can oft appear trollish to outsiders when its just general in-community jibe/discussion/commentary.
