Question about cleaning out my LR4 catalog?

When I upload images to LR, I normally do a 1:1 preview especially for my main work. Where are these stored? In cache? BTW, I don't get that whole cache concept. I just can't wrap my head around it. I am wanting to start clearing out some space in my catalogs. Or, do I just go and delete the cache that has been building? I really don't want to screw anything up here. If you haven't noticed, this is my weak area...computers! Thanks everyone!

A cache is a temporary memory. A cache is a component that transparently stores data so that future requests for that data can be served faster.
