No longer a newbie, moving up!
The EF 70-200mm f/4L is another one that it is quite sharp wide open. (F/5.6 is just slightly sharper, f/8 is not as sharp at f/4).
(According to photozone, it is sharper at f/4 than the 70-200mm f/2.8L lens at any f-stops in 70mm, 135mm and 200mm.)
