Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
Just got a T1i to replace my old pentax. My question is, what detail setting should i be using? there are ones already set on there like standard portrait neutral monochrome faithful and landscape and then there are options to make your own where you can set the sharpness, contrast, saturation, and color tone. what should i have these set to? right now i have sharpness set to 6/7 contrast 5/7 saturation 5/7 and color tone 6/7. any help would be great, i just want to get the best out of my photos.

ps. i shoot in raw

I generally stay in Landscape unless I'm shooting people, where I'll use Portrait. Since each shoot will have different conditions, I'm really not that into all kinds of presets. After I shoot, I'll usually edit the RAW file and there, you can change the settings across the board anyway. I'd suggest getting to know the Digital Photo Professional software that came with your camera and moving forward from there. It's no Photoshop, but it's powerful enough to maximize the quality of your shots while you're getting used to your camera. And, of course, shooting RAW, you canmake changes over and over and still restart from scratch.

Jeez, no caps, lots of missing punctuation.

RTFM! None of those settings effect a Raw image file, that's why it's called Raw. All of those settings only get applied to JPEG image files.

Why are you shooting Raw? Apparently, you don't understand what a Raw image data file is.

thanks for your advice.. it's appreciated

Good Lord. This is a beginners forum. Do you really believe your response was appropriate?

Yes, I think it was absolutely appropriate, or I wouldn't have posted it.

Did it shake up the OP a bit and make them consider that maybe they need to learn more about how Raw capture and their camera work? I sure hope so.

the only thing you actually taught me in that reply was that you're an asshole.

Or did it give him the impression that this is not a place to learn about something he may be passionate about. Forums, in my opinion, are about the transfer of information to share ideas, information and experience and allow people to further their abilities in a place where people share a common interest. To me, and this may just be me, it was a smack-down. But then I'm not seeking advice from someone who feels it's better to berate than benefit. That's what i gleaned from it. I could be wrong. Perhaps the OP is a better person for having received your advice.

I think criticizing a persons writing skills really adds nothing to a conversation unless that conversation is about grammar. I also believe that RTFM is never an appropriate response to any question. In no instance do I believe there is a "stupid" question.

I respect your belief that you helped the OP. I also respect that this is where you and I agree to disagree. I've read your posts. You're knowledge surpasses that of many. I suppose it's your delivery that caught my attention.

*edit:

I posted too soon. Now we both know the OP's opinion.

iNick, I checked out your Flickr account. You've got some great work in there. My first DSLR was the T1i, and I wish i still had it as a second body. It's a great camera!

Thanks Jay!! i really appreciate the kind words my friend. Im loving the T1i so far, looking to upgrade to a 50mm 1.4 prime lens as soon as possible.

No problem. And now that you're a Canon owner, you should also consider checking out Photography-on-the-Net. Canon Digital Photography Forums - Powered by vBulletin
It's (mostly) all Canon, all the time.

I wish I had the 50mm 1.4...one day maybe. For now I'm addicted to my 18-135 kit lens that came with my 60D.

Keep shooting!

I'll check that forum out for sure, thank you!

Nice. It's a great group, too.

Indeed, hidden among words you did'nt like, the correct answer to the original question was in Kmh post:

None of those settings effect a Raw image file, that's why it's called Raw. All of those settings only get applied to JPEG image files.

Try to take the best from any answer ;) .
