question about textures

We have seen a lot of cool textures on photos on the internet (mostly wedding) and didnt know if there were any tutorials on how to do this to photos. Some people do some really cool things to make it look older. I use Gimp and the tutorials for that are a little harder to come by. If you have any direction for us please share!
