I believe that most are underexposed which some could be saved in lightroom or photoshop. Also most of them are out of focus and I would think that is due to slow shutter speeds. You know what settings you were on?

They are all different - some in sport mode 1/1600 and other 1/600 in tv mode. All were taken at 300 focal length and F5.6. At 1/4000 I will then probably to increase the film speed? I am new to this game so thanks for your help - I would really like to master the fine art of birds in flight.........

You've got a good start just by getting those moving critters in the center square. I don't think the light was with you as can be a problem on the water. You can probably do this down in the 1/1200 area with good light while continueing to work on your hand holding skills. The more you do it the less stressed you become in "trying" to get the shot and that really helps.

So I should probably ditch the monopod and hold the camera? and this may sound silly - left or right eye ?

What camera and lens are you using?

Your images are well timed and i liked the third image in the first four and both in the second; but i think they are all trimmed selection of large images; that may be the reason for lack of sharpness; i don't dare bird photography because this i think the most expensive genre of photography save indoor setups. My equipments are does not permit me, unless i find some sitting ducks

So carry on ;)

Regards :D

Canon 500D with sigma 70 - 300 - and yes they are all cropped from larger images hence the lack of sharpness. I have tried manual focus but this is very difficult. I think I am aiming a little high......................;)

Is this one better?

i find getting good focus is the toughest part of bird photos. i use spot metering to get the exposure on just the bird so its exposed correctly and use single point focus for focusing (using a nikon)
