Yeah, I'd probably go take pictures if I had the gear, kind of have to wait for it to arrive.

I don't really get why people post in threads, if they're just gonna be all sour about it. It really seems just as pointless to me, as this thread may seem to you. A lot of forums I visit, people do threads like this, and then the people talk about the different stuff the person purchased, offering insight on the items, or just having a friendly discussion. I'm kind of surprised that didn't happen here.

Pointless? The first post is pointless... it lists a bunch of equipment and pretty much makes little to no attempt at starting a meaningful discussion. You did not even post exactly what type of photography you are interested in.

I guess what my point is this....

You rate/critique photographs. You ask questions about gear.

So if your true intention is not to show off your big guns.... I apologize but more thought should be put into the thread starter. Perhaps start with what you like to shoot and continue to describe why made those choices. Finish off by sparking discussion on the reasons behind your choices not the equipment itself.

I think he was posting because he was excited, and looking for a little guidance on his purchases (did he make good choices? do you know of any quirks with this equipment? would you have picked something different? something better coming out?).

Maybe he didn't phase it perfectly in his initial post, but he has made his intent known now. I don't see the purpose of attacking him for it.

Share advice or get on with your day

I do not want to "rate" your gear. Nor am I interested in making a judgment call about what your equipment choices say about you, although I took it to be an invitation to do just that.

To answer your question directly: I posted in this thread because I find craven gear lust to be somewhat icky. If I see a post that says "Rate my gear" it might be someone getting ready to put some older gear on the market, and wants help describing it for eBay. It's an example, there's dozens of other reasons for a thread like that.

But I couldn't just let a "wow, marvel at my new toys" thread go by without commenting on it.

But hey, cumbaya, no hard feelings. I lord my equipment choices over everyone in my sig file, I don't pretend to be any better.

Fair enough, Iron Flatline. I can see where your point is, so yeah, if I came off a bit like a braggart, I apologize for that. And I can see how one could justify saying that I took that position, even if that was not my intent. So yeah, sorry if I pissed anyone off or anything, that wasn't my intent at all.

So, the box arrived whilst I was home sick. And I just wanted to show why I chose the 50mm f/1.4...

Creamy, creamy bokeh. And I chose to buy another SB-800 because I'm getting heavy into portraiture and am going to start shooting senior pictures for my friends to try and get some extra cash flow and get more experienced with portraiture so that maybe someday I can make a profession, or serious part-time job, of it. And I chose to buy the 70-200mm because I've wanted that lens for a long time to shoot sports at the local college (University of Maine) and I give my pictures to the public relations person up there in return for being able to stand where I want, so I wanted a better lens than my 180mm to shoot the hockey games up there, or else they'll take away my media pass (gotta get shots as good as the local paper they told me) But between you guys and me, my shots are already as good as the local paper's.

So yeah, that's why I got the gear that I did, and I guess what I should have titled this thread was 'This is the gear I just ordered, anyone use this stuff?' 'cause I really just wanted to talk about the stuff I bought and see if other people have used the same gear and what they have used it for. So, sorry for what how I started this thread, but hopefully this will get this thread going in the direction I wanted it to go in the first place a bit better. Cheers.

Wow, love the colors and dof in that shot! I love stuff like that! I'd be curious to see that same shot taken with a 50mm 1.8 to see the difference, since thats what I got - didn't have the money to go for the 1.4. Very jealous of your purchases.

Well, you obviously don't need a lot of help with the 50mm. That's a really lovely image.

... and here's a trick. Girls like getting "Flowers" for Valentine's Day. Shoot two more, print and frame them, and you'll be "the man" for quite a while.

Hmm, yeah, I'll have to print some pictures out and just start handing 'em to the ladies, that'll totally get me some action HAHA.

And I afforded the stuff with the money I got for selling my desktop computer a few weeks ago, and I got $500 on the Super Bowl. So, I had some money left over. And I'll put the leftover in savings and I'm all set for camera stuff for a while. A long while. My next purchase will be in the summer, and that'll be splitting a macro lens with my dad (we'll each pay half) 'cause he really wants a macro lens to shoot flowers and whatnot, and I wouldn't mind having one at my disposal, so yeah. That'll be good. I don't let him use my other stuff though, HAHA.

I thought about it, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I held off because I'm thinking about getting the 85mm PC-E when that comes out later in the year, so I'll see how that tilt-shift treats shots first. But, I'm gonna have to keep working for a while to get enough saved up again. HAHA.

I'm sure the shot wouldn't be much different with the 1.8. I would have gone with the 1.8 had I not gotten the extra cash flow with the Super Bowl winnings. I've heard good things about the 1.8 just as much as the 1.4. I'll shoot some today with the 1.4 at 1.4 and 1.8 and let you know how it goes.
