raw file trouble

I'm trying to open raw files on cs2. It will not allow me to. I read somewhere that if i have cs2 and a newer camera, I will not be able to do so. I have a canon rebel eos xs. What am I missing here??

Is it completely updated? Im not sure if they update the old ones for new cameras.

I don't know.. but you can Google/download/use FastStone Image Viewer to view and tweak CR2s while you're waiting to find out.

I just downloaded the updates. Still won't open file. Hopefully someone will come along that has had the problem and knows the solution.

The Canon XS requires at least Camera Raw 4.6 (ACR). Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras

You would need at least CS3 to update to ACR 4.6.

CS2 still qualifies for upgrade pricing to CS5 if you have a legal, registered copy.

CS2 is the last version that qualifies for upgrade pricing to CS5. Once CS6 is released, CS2 will no longer qualify for upgrade pricing, as long as Adobe maintains it's current policies.

I have been looking at cs5. It is pretty expensive, even for the upgrade. I have heard that lightroom allows you to use raw files. Is that true, or would it not because I still have cs2?

You should have received Canon Digital Photo Professional with your camera or you may be able to download it if you can't find the CD. It will open Canon raw files (.CR2) in much the same way ACR does. Some people strongly prefer one over the other, but some of us use either one, depending on the image. In any event, it will allow you to convert your CR2 files to tiff files and then open those in PS.

Download a program called Photoscape. They have a tool that converts RAW to Jpeg, and its a free editing software. Its a decent program if your new to the whole editing game like myself.

Lightroom's editing function is a Raw Converter (ACR 6), but is not a complete image editing solution. It does not have a layers function, and it has only rudimentry slection tools.

Lightroom 3's main funtion is image database management. Image editing is a secondary function.

Lightroom 3 costs $299 retail, while the upgrade to CS5 is only $199 if you qualify for upgrade pricing. Full retail for CS5 is $699.
