I am wondering if the subscription based service that Adobe has makes sense for me. Already subscriptions cost less than "owned" versions over the length of a year, CS Design Standard is only $65/month with a contract and only $99/month without, while buying upfront costs about $1,300 (verses about $1200/year month to month or $780/year w/ annual contract). If Adobe comes out with a paid upgrade every 1-2 years, then it really doesn't make sense for me to buy the software outright.

Thoughts?

No. I think in the long run - over a period of years - you spend more, especially if you never upgrade - and a lot of people don't. There is incentive here on both ends, especially if you're a business who has an annual or quarterly income model - who cares what you spent last year so long as you made a profit this year. Plus you don't pay for updates. The moment an update is available, you can download it.

I'm just wondering if it's worth it to me, I like to keep my software update, but if Adobe releases an update every 3-4 years, it's not going to make much sense - at least not the annual commitment.

Hmm but Adobe normally offer some steep discounts on upgrades if you already own the previous version (and often even if you just own other Adobe software). So that new version might cost you far less to upgrade to than the brand new version that starts things off. If its software you are going to be using long term chances are purchasing and having cheaper upgrades in future years might well be a more viable option over software rental, which whilst it might not cripple you year to year might well - long term - end up charging you a lot more (esp if its a software option you envision using for many years/decades).

A few calculations and here is what I come up with, based on my usual software habits of not upgrading until I actually need to, rarely more often than every other version.

Based on 3 or 4 years of usage starting with a full version:

Original software $1,300 plus one upgrade at the end of this period $550 for a total of $1,850

3 years of the subscription deal: $2,340

4 years of the subscription deal: $3,120 and those are with the contract. I don't see the point of the subscription.

I guess I'll join the ranks of the pirates then

You gotta love it when a company announces that their newest way of doing business brings "immense value to our customers" while in fact designed to bring in more money into the company's purse. Then they'll ***** about the number of lost sales due to piracy...

Not to talk about cloud computing. Some of my clients don't even allow me to send them files over the net, I don't think they would appreciate if I used cloud... Why don't they worry about fixing the security problems on the net first? Oops, I forgot, they can't.
