Well, I would like to remove the boundary between photography and abstract painting.

So far at least it's not possible to digitize the smell of oil paint.

It is possible. There are electronic “noses” though I suspect they would need to be tuned to pick up the smell of paint. I think the real problem is in returning it to a smell from the signal generated by the sensors.
