Removing out of focus parts of images? Any tools for that?

Where did you get that the lens has to do it?? ....

I basically want to mechanically use my lens' ability to determine the distance all things are from it and slice a 3D space into layers..

Indeed I think you must be being deliberately dense, it's not your usual way. In the very first post we have
'I'd like to extract out all regions of all photos that are out of focus and make them white (transparent). How can this be done? I want to create a 3D effect in post.'
The lens will get portions out of focus & it is desired to make these invisible in post. the lens isn't expected to remove them itself!

Just the removal of out of focus portions, AFAIK there is no such a process. Stacking just picks the most focused frame for each part and will definitely leave a blur if all the frames are OOF at that point.

So what is the end goal? A single image of all the in-focus parts of multiple images?

You'd just need to do it in photoshop.

Bring your images in and stack them as separate layers, then use the masking tool to show, or hide the OOF portions.

If you've got something in focus, the AI masking tools should be able to pick it out, though there might be a bit of trial and error to find which tool works best for each shot.

Apps would have to work of of 'knowing' what parts of each image are and aren't in focus. But I don't know of any that can produce images of just the parts that are in focus. It appears you're going to have to do so manually with an editing app that allows you to select the portion of an image that you feel is in focus.

That should be easy to do. Take the various shots of different focus points, then print each one on transparency film for your printer. Don’t use stacking post editing at all, just print the individual shots.

I don't think they do tell which are in focus, just which are the best focused of the images being stacked at a given point. Every time I've used stacking there have been parts (generally the background) that are completely out of focus in the final image.
