Rent lenses before buying?

I rented a Siggy 15mm and Nikkor 16mm fisheyes together so I could race them side-by-side to make a personal comparison.

Before I bought my 400 f2.8 I rented it to see if I liked it and to get used to shooting a long lens before spending all that cash. But then I also test drive new cars before I buy them. Call it a habit if you will.
