He lived here in my town and I would often drive by his business for work. This is sad.

He was quite a character. When he was on dPreview's lighting forum, he took on a lot of detractors in a feisty manner, but their comments drove him to improve the reflector performance of his lights. After that period, he formed his own lighting forum on the Buff web site, but it was later rendered inactive, but the archived discussions were there and searchable the last time I visited the site. Buff was probably the one individual who did MORE to promote monobloc aka monolight lighting in the USA than any other man. His little company promoted tirelessly,every single month, for years on end, and the brand grew and grew until it was no long just "a little company". From the ungainly, big, round "coffee can" style 5,000 and 10,000 model units of ther early years, to the workhorse White Lighting Ultra Series, the Zeus series of pack and head systems,the Alien Bee line, and finally to today's Einstein 640, Paul C. Buff's company was always expanding its product range. Buff advertised and promoted itself better than any lighting manufacturing company in North America.
