The first one kinda pops, for me at least. The second shot though...I dunno...my attention is just not engaged by it all that much...with all of the chaos of the dials and hoses and such, it's just not as riveting as the first shot.

with the first one, I would have rather the in focus plane landed on a rivet instead of the gap between them.

The second one just doesn't say anything to me. There's not much to it compositionally, the subject in and of itself isn't particularly engaging unless perhaps you're a steampunk aficionado.

I couldn't get the crop or angle right on this one. I think it could have been better but I just ran out of skill.

I had a heck of a time seen the dof while on camera. I had to use the live view while at a really bad angle. Not an excuse i know.

That's essentially a macro shot, with macro, I typically find the best approach is to use some sort of mini tripod in a situation like that and move the camera to focus, instead of trying to focus with the camera.
