Why don't you tell us what you think of this shot? Who is that in the picture?

One of my children. But this isn't in the family photo section. I think it would be more powerful with a wave coming, in one way. However also with a wave coming in I would have lost the quietness and stillness of it too. he would have a much different look of excitement and not concentrating intently with his foothold on the rock under him. A trade off. I cropped it, I think I liked it better uncropped it made him smaller. I cropped it to define him more in the frame. I lost some effect doing so it was a trade off as well.

what do I REALLY think of it? I think it is a moment in time of being a small boy with not a care in the world (other than staying on this rock). who obviously by the wetness in his clothing has fallen off it at least once, but got right back on again.

searching for photos that mean something, I believe its right on track. it will go in "not there but on track pile." Its a little weak, but it isn't off. dof could be better. he is too in focus to have it cropped. But again, another trade off cant have him to out of focus the shot loses its meaning...
if it was stronger, I would be more content with it.

I just wanted to add something as well. I have a much harder time shooting my children objectively. it is very hard to separate yourself in that way and have a clear view of what you are doing and the resulting photos. which adds a lot of hesitation. Least for me. As I basically have to attempt to pretend this isn't my child and look at it as anyone else would. I have and do shoot others children, but usually don't as I get strange looks when I do. which I cant blame the parents for wondering why some guy is taking photos of them and especially their child.

Occasionally their are instances when shooting your child benefits you, or at least me. I have some amazing photos because they are my children as well. so I get to have more inside moments to shoot and windows of opportunity to get good images of amazing moments. I separate them when I start to shoot objectively they don't go in the family photo pile as the criteria is very different for the photographs.

back to sooc. yeah, not a fan of the crop or the added contrast. Should have left it alone from the beginning and not messed with it.

tweaking images almost never works out for me. i tend to get it from the beginning or not at all. Get too far from the original. More i mess with it, more dissatisfied i become with it.
usually end up right back where I started four versions later. Difference between what you see and what you end up with I suppose.

You seem to think that there is some magic thing that happens when you press the button; that's not the way it works.
Just doing things at random isn't a process.

putting up pictures, talking all that stuff without accepting help when you clearly need it is a real waste of time for you - and for anyone else who might want to help.

Actually, I don't like it better, FWIW.

You've made it darker, left too much space behind the subject, and the distant ocean is not helping.

If this were mine, I would crop more off the right side and some off the top. And leave it lighter, please.

lol okay, here is the thing. Hear me out, then respond however you like ill listen.
no foreground no balance. First crop did that. Another reason I should have left it alone. lol I crop off the side and the top it narrows in on just him and becomes closer to a portrait shot. I started sooc with a foreground, background and him being a much smaller piece of the frame but the subject and focal point slightly off center. which made him look smaller with the expanse of the ground and ocean which for me at least had a certain effect. Little boy, big expansive ocean. And seemed closer to where I intended the shot. im to the point of cropping more than half the frame now its becoming a portrait shot..

Now its WAY off target. I have the little boy and sort of the moment but its starting to look more like a family shot to me and I lost part of the "little boy" expanding him in the frame. With so much of the frame cropped its going to start to limit printability (this isn't a good practice to get into in general im thinking) and it still goes back to if the image is that much varied from what I took I really didn't get the image I took.

its taken at 24 mp. I don't always shoot at 24 mp though and often I use jpeg with lower iq. Cutting more than half the frame, I could be wrong here, but it cant be a good habit to get into it also kind of puts one in the habit of not shooting there intended shot from the beginning..


(im definitely going to get flamed now) haha
