Excellent attitude! Once you've got the basic technical camera stuff under your belt, remember that photography is about light (and shadow), and learning to master the light is a life-long path as it takes to into an area of light sources, reflectors, modifiers, etc., whether using "ambient light" or flash or studio light or combinations thereof. In terms of image, the simpler the image, the easier it is for the viewer to "get" your intent. In my signature, I've quoted a three-sentence bit of advice Lew Lorton gave to someone quite some time ago, and I found it to be a very good and concise description of what we usually want to do as photographers.
