Rule(?) of Thirds

I know the rule of thrids is most standedly 3 horizonatal strips but can there be variations on that? For example can you have a stream running verticle with two sides of land on each side? Or uneven 3rds like a fence that makes a T wit the left right and botom being the three angles? Is there any other way to accomplish thirds staying in the rules? are there any rules?

I think that the "rule of thirds" should be called the "suggested guideline of thirds" :roll: Don't worry about "staying in the rules". Rules after all, were made to be broken.

And yes, it goes both horizontally and vertically. The idea being that if you draw the four lines to divide it into thirds both ways...your strongest point of interest should be at one of the four intersections of the 4 lines.

To me, the rule of thirds is the explanation why certain things look good.

Once you understand that, you will be able to take good compositional pictures, whether they follow that rule or not.
