Rules of Thirds

Following on from advice with KmH ive been working on the rules of thirds.

How did i do?

in #2 is the front of the photo thats in focus too overpowering and taking the viewers eye away from the baby?

Also, any idea how i can remove the label that i stupidly left?

Speaking just to the Rule of 1/3:

#1 - I might bring the baby's head a smidge to the right but other than that, I like it.

#2 - All I can see if that Toy. So, yes, it's way to disctracting.

I'm not a photoshop pro, so the easiest way for me to remove the label is to just retake the photo - assuming you still have possesion of the child

I thought the same with the 2nd. She is my daughter so i'm lucky enough to be able to tale pictures of her for the rest of my life )

I think you need to get rid of excess stuff and make the baby larger in the frame.
Darken all the too-bright stuff and lighten the baby's face.

I need to learn more about lightroom and ps. i can only lighten the whole picture. hoe can you section it off? layers?

If you're going to apply the rule of thirds, consider this:

- You can place the subject ON a 1/3 line (or at the intersection of two 1/3 lines),

OR,

- You can place the subject within a 1/3 region of the image (right/middle/left, upper/middle/lower, thirds).

Go look at some pictures that you like. See how things are placed within the frame. It's interesting.

The 2004 edition is much, much, much better. Her co-author has really bollixed up the new edition.

When you watch TV or a movie, notice how they also use the RoT.

Also make note of how they use light. You can often see multiple shadows being cast, or catch lights in peoples eyes because they are using both available and fill lighting.

I actually started doing this last night while watching game of thrones. I'll keep an eye out for the lighting also now

Rules of Thirds is merely a guideline that may, or may not, give an image a balanced composition.


I always try to think about balance more than anything.

I can barely watch movies or TV anymore. All I can think about is how the scene is being lit, what kind focal length they are using and how they are deliberately posing the actors/actresses.

I like #1 .but i would of moved the yellow toy and 1 behind it .It to me takes away from the baby face .

#1 seems a little dark on the left side .In all i think you did a grand job .

Did you use a flash or reflector of sorts maybe?Looks like window light on the right side.

Im no pro on portraits ,just my 2 cents worth is what i would of done .
