My friend has a whole collection of sand pics (we lived in Qatar, lots of sand!)
Sand always lends itself to Tone Mapping to bring out the details. See example below:

I noticed you dont want your pics edited or I would have done a tone mapped version of yours.
 
Thanks for the tip. I think the footprints would really pop with tone mapping.
The example I used was perfect for Tone Mapping as the sun was low causing nice shadows. The example from the OP looks like the lighting was overhead. Still worth the processing but wont pop as much.

I appreciate the tip, and I will look into it, although having said that, I've never liked the look of tone-mapped images. The one you posted is not bad, but leaning on the contrast in raw conversion will get you almost to the same point. That's what I did for this one, where the SOOC looked almost as flat as the one you posted. However, I'll give it a shot and see how it looks.
