What's new

Sarah and Sunhine......: )

oooo, I like these, Carolyn! Especially your first version of the top image. I totally understand what Mark is saying, and technically speaking he is correct - that last crop does better follow the rule of thirds, and that crop works - for following the rule of thirds.

But I also agree with April - for me, the first one is best, even though the rule is broken. I think the tighter the crop, the more is lost with this particular image. Just personal preference - I love seeing the extra hair, and the bit of shoulder we see on the bottom right, in the top image. It's beautiful work.

And may I say, I think your classes are agreeing with you. ;)

That was a pretty minor reason for me suggesting a crop. I don't follow rules for the sake of the rules.

I am curious though. For those that like the first one better: What does the image say to you that the second one doesn't? Are there things that might be done a little different that can strengthen that?

And I did not mean to suggest that you did.:

For me, it's just a sexier image with that line of shoulder showing. I like just the *suggestion* of a body attached to the hair and that eye. I wouldn't even mind seeing a tad more, if it were included in the shot. It's a dramatic close crop as it is, though. :)

I stumbled accross this.....about the first pic..

I'm no professional, and barely a beginner,

but to me, the lightness of the background takes ALL influence of "hiding". Be it viewer or world. now..it has a feeling of "i know you can see me, but only what I let you see". That's just what I feel. more contrast and a darker background would jump out at me as just a mild observer of photography. not a black background, but maybe just not somuch of a white glow.

Thank you everyone for your feedback.....Every bit of it has helped me see things differently.....I need to tell you though that these photos are from my very first and second portraits shoots I have ever done....and to be perfectly honest I didn't have a clue at that time what the rule of thirds was.....had never even heard the term....However before the year was over I had a thirst to read everything I could find regarding photography.

I still have that thirst and that is what led me to this forum (sure glad I ran into this place) I have learned so much and am still learning from being here! Thanks again everyone!!!

Both of these girls had such beauty that they were unaware of....I felt the need to show them just how beautiful they are.........We had lots of fun and we all learned things about ourselves so the experience was a wonderful thing for us all.

Thanks for listening! : )
