I have decided to invest in some seamless paper rolls for backdrops, but I am looking for suggestions on a second color to buy. The first roll will be white, but I'd like to invest in a second roll to add an option. Does anyone have suggestions on a good second color to choose? Is there any good "standard" set of colors to start with that covers most situations?

Thunder gray.

Thank you both for the suggestion! It looks like I couldn't go wrong with Thunder Gray. I hadn't thought about gelling the light to change the color.

White, gray, black, blue, brown, old masters are standards...colored gels are useful.

It is pretty easy to key - shift or " lift " gray to pure white, as was done in the first shot of 13 year-old Justin. All of these shots were made in front of a gray background, with a colored gel used on three.

No retouching.

Thunder gray is easy to make white or black, depending upon how much light shoot at it (white) or how much light you keep from hitting it (black). In regular situations, it produces a nice dark gray

Here is one main light camera right,(24x24 inch softbox) and my normal hair light (11.5 inch reflector and 20 degree grid and 2 layers of mylar clip-on diffusion and barn doors at about 25 Watt-seconds from behind and camera left.

I make storage tubes for mine using 4" PVC sewer pipe. A glue on cap on one end, and a thread-on clean-out on the other. Virtually bullet-proof.
