I would look at the mentioned Nikon 85 f/1.8 $450 which is on my wish list for basketball photography along with the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 $1100. I shot an entire basketball season with my D70 and 50 f/1.8 $135 which also worked great but if you are looking for that range with better build quality look at the Nikon AF 50 f/1.4 $340 or AF-S f/1.4 $490.
