Should I sell my D90 + 18-200mm and get a D7000 + 70-300?

Let's assume I could sell my Nikon D90 for $500 plus my 18-200mm lens for another $550, that would total about $1,000, give or take a few bucks.

I can get a brand new D7000 for $900 and if I pair that with the 70-300mm lens at B&H, right now I can get those for just under $1,300.

As I see it, the pros are:

  1. Newer sensor
  2. Better ISO capability
  3. 100mm more reach

Downsides:

  1. Out an additional $300'ish
  2. Loss of range from 18mm to 70mm.

My other lenses currently include the 18-55 kit lens from my D40 days, the 35mm 1.8 and my 50mm 1.8. So, I still have **some** of those other ranges, but not all of them.

Think it's worth it?

I found a good side by side video on Youtube that gives a lot of reasons for the upgrade. I like the idea of getting just the D7000 body and keeping the 18-200mm lens. I can always grab the other lens at another time...but not for the $200 discount as a bundle...

Decisions decisions decisions....

because newer=better.
and that means you must need it right?

I'm not one to automatically make the leap. I know people who are like that but not me. I had my D40 for 2 years before I got my D90. I quickly outgrew the D40 but I still have it.

The D90 has been my camera for 3 years now, so it's had a lot of use. I think the primary reason to upgrade is better ISO performance, 2 SD card slots, a better sensor and the cost difference is negligible.

I dunno.

the price difference is assuming you can get what you THINK you can get for your current gear. manicmike is STILL trying to sell his D90 at $400. i am all for upgrading the D90. I went with the D300s though for a button configuration I liked better, a better AF system, and a better build.

I currently have a 17-50 2.8 and an 80-200 2.8 on my D7000...There are very few times I miss that 50-80 range. I would almost rather have the extra 100mm depending on what you shoot

Edit: The two card slots is wonderful. It definitely handles high ISO better. Consider selling the D40 for some extra cash.

Yeah I went from a d90, to a d5100, now to the d7000. The jump from the d90 to the d5100 was a mistake and I was considering going back but when I tried out the d7000 it was a night and day difference. I like my speed and the d7000 is quick. And the 2 card slot is amazing. Get the d7000, I got mine for $550 so try to find the best deals you can :)

Yeah used lol, locally. I was actually off a limb, I was looking for a d90 cuz the d7000 was so expensive but ran into a guy who was asking 750 and I just threw a number at him thinking he wouldn't except but did...so dang I took it :)

Adorama has them for $649.99, its the cheapest I've seen online. And there conditions are usually better than what they say, they are conservative when they rate the conditions.

I'm a die hard D7000 lover but, if you are happy with your d90, what is the D7000 going to do for you that your D90 won't. I'd wait for the D7000 upgrade that is just around the corner.

Nothing wrong with the D90, invest money in a better lense for the D90.
