What's new

Should I sell my D90 + 18-200mm and get a D7000 + 70-300?

First... Lets assume your talking about the 70-300 VR f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED(which is an awesome lens) and not the 70-300 f/4-5.6G (which is an awful lens).

BH & Adorama both have Factory refurbished Nikon D7000 for ~$750. I would jump on that before buying a new D7000 for $1k. We are just a few weeks away from Nikon announcing the D7000 replacement. I would assume the D7000 price is going to fall after that.

There are 5 D90's for sale in my area... 4 come with the kit lens (18-105mm) and one is just the body. The 4 with the lens are listed at ~$550 (give or take a few bucks) and the body is listed at $375 (~40k shutter count)... None of them have sold in the past 2 months.

The Nikon 18-200mm is also a hard sale in my area. There are a few up for sale right now ranging from $700 to $430. The $430 will probably be bought soon (probably for $400) and the rest will sit until they either give up or lower the price.

I'd make sure you can sell your existing gear before you plan on spending the money :)

Having said all that, I loved the 70-300VR on my D7000. It was an amazing combo. I also have the 18-200mm and even though it doesn't get much use i cant bring myself to sell it. If i only had one lens for my D7000 the 18-200mm would be a top contender.

If it was me... Id sell the D90, buy a refurb D7000 and keep the 18-200mm.
