I like the way he appears to be using the lamp in #1 as a support; whether intentional or accidental, great timing. Both appear somewhat under-exposed.

The first one can use some more light and some contrast.
The second would be my favourite but the well lit busy background is to demanding.

Great timing in BOTH. The upper hand in both is great -- a nice visual joke in both pictures.

I disagree about the background in the second one. The subject reads just fine, and a little confusion with the background strengthens the visual joke of the hand grabbing at the skull. Strong diagonal line, echoed in the design on the wall right, and picked up a bit by various other diagonal elements. Gotta have the strong diagonals if you're going to freeze them still like that.

Trimming a little off the top of the frame wouldn't hurt any, though, it would beef up the sense of height.
