Know of the guy here that was the last local winner. Not quite that much and it didn't take quite so long, but he had an attorney and accountant in place before he claimed his prize as well. I would say he has been largely successful in managing his money and I don't doubt he is now worth considerably more than when he claimed his prize. Some can do it well.

To be fair they just did what they were advised to do; most of the big lottery groups have advice slips and such for winnings of this magnitude because most people don't know how to handle that much money all at once. And yeah getting sound advice and investing it is generally one of the best options - the trick with such a huge win is to live off the interest and what the money generates rather than to live off the money itself (though most people will use a portion of the winnings instantly for some purchases).

That way you live your life based on the income the money makes; whilst if you live on the money itself it will eventually run out (and very quickly if you leap into a mansion and millionaire lifestyle without an actual income to keep it going)
