I would consider it more standard than wide angle or zoom. The widest it goes is about the tightest a wide angle gets. Much past 30mm is going to no longer be wide angle. I would suggest a devoted wide angle like the Tokina 11-16mm that is roughly in the same price range as your Tamron.

The one mentioned in the OP is a wide angle zoom.

When deciding I determine I would miss more the 17-28 end more than the 50-75mm which can be compensated for with a few steps forward. So opted for the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and more usable in more situations like indoors,street and landscape.
