Because it's SO much more fun to put the camera on the tripod, use a wireless trigger for the shutter and then you can hand hold the light and umbrella. This way you have first hand experience when you get that VAL (voice activated lightstand) and will be able to direct them better.

It will almost work... add a shoot through umbrella and you're there. A "shoot through" is a white fabric umbrella but the threads are translucent white so you actually shoot "through" the umbrella rather than bounce off it (although you can do that too). Shoot through umbrellas are fairly inexpensive. Perhaps $20.

You can get a kit that includes an umbrella stand, and a tilting bracket designed to hold the umbrella rod while also providing a cold-shoe to hold the flash.

This is basically like a very inexpensive alternative to a soft-box (although a soft-box is enclosed with a nice shiny reflective interior so any light that would have bounced inward will get bounced back out again and tends to control the light better than an umbrella (you'll get more scatter with an umbrella -- well... parabolic umbrellas excepted ... they are highly directional.)

If you purchase an inexpensive light kit, you get a couple of light stands with hot shoe adaptors, and four small umbrellas. So get up off your cheap and get to ordering.

Oh, and BTW: DO NOT get a kit that includes cheap lights. Just the stands, adaptors, and umbrellas.

Well, I don't know why you wouldn't be accepted here. After all, they accepted me.

A couple of years ago I bought a kit that included two (not very tall) light stands, two hotshoe adapters, two white and two silver umbrellas all for (don't remember for sure) around $40 (?) I use speed lights on the stands. Don't waste your money on any "continuous" lighting fixtures in the deal.
