Some help with focusing please.

I have my first slr camera, nikon d300. I'm having problems when i focus on close ups. If it's on a butterfly for instance, it might only focus on the head and blur the body. I know it's probably something really stupid i'm doing, but i need help please. Ive had a lot of good pics spoilt because of this..

Depth-of-field (DOF) gets very shallow when you get in close. With good macro lenses the DOF can be so small as to necessitate several exposures using a range of focus ponts and then 'focus stacking' the images.
