I have recently become quite enamored with HDR. I'm relatively new to it, but was looking for some feedback. I find that I'm tending towards the more dramatic side of things as opposed to the realistic. Not sure if this approach is doing the images a favor or not.
Painterly Approach:

extremely difficult shot to get due to the boats bobbing on the waves and messing up my allignment a bit. the noise in the sky bothers me.

feedback welcomed and appreciated!

The choice of a painterly effect is up to you and what you're trying to covey in the photograph. Personally, I find that these kinds of effects look better when printed than when displayed on a video screen, but that's just me.

There are two different tone mapping operators for HDR - global and local. The local operators (like Photomatix's "Details Enhancer") amplify noise. Fortunately, Photomatix has a nice noise suppression routine, though overuse creates a rather 'soft' image. Several people on this forum use Topaz with great effect.

HDR is difficult on things that move, so I don't suggest those kinds of subjects if you're just learning. With the exception of waterfalls and moving streams, I prefer subjects that hold still.

I'm glad you brought up printing out HDR shots - I gave it a try with a few of mine and - wow! The difference was pretty amazing. Thanks for suggesting Topaz - I am going to look into it. I've noticed the softening in Photomatix and would like to try something new!
