Ha! I just did pretty much the exact same thing on a recent trip to the nature center. Sat there for a LONG time, just watching and waiting for something to come along. Nothing did. Finally got a couple of terns flying overhead and then some geese. By that time, it was getting close to sunset and so I thought I should take a test shot of the river bank across from me to see if I needed to adjust my settings. In the test shot I thought I saw something on this dead piece of wood so I zoomed in and took a picture of it, but with my vision still couldn't quite make out what it was.

Got home, looked through the photos--and discovered that the thing I'd focused on was a white plastic bag. :lmao:
The thing I *should* have focused on was the egret in the background, just about as far behind, and as blurry, as yours. I still can't quite figure out how I missed that thing, and it still makes me a little ticked. :D

Yeah, sometimes we just don't see what is right in front of us. I had been there for a little while, and I knew there was a Blue Heron that hung around there so I looked for him when I got there. I didn't see him so I contented myself by photographing the ducks and gulls. A few minutes later there was mass exodus from the area for whatever reason. Ducks, geese, birds, gulls flying to my left. Along with one Blue Heron and me wondering where the heck he came from. When I got home and saw this I figured out where he came from ;)

I got him later though:

Here and Here

I had a workshop leader tell me "before you take the shot, turn around and see what's behind you."

White plastic bag FOR THE WIN!!!!!

Oh, I ALWAYS look behind me but this was in FRONT of me which is why I missed it!
