Sony make white lenses??? I didn't even realise!

Namely the 70-200...Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 SSM G (SAL-70200G) - Full Format Review / Lab Test

This really did bring a smile to my face, trust Sony to go the route of completely copying Canon. And also trying a cheap marketing ploy!

Perhaps everyone here knows this already though, forgive my ignorance if so!

The idea with white lenses is to prevent heat buildup which can cause separation over time. With this super large lenses, there is a lot of surface area to absorb heat. I have no idea how valid this is, but that's the idea afaik.

And as far as someone copying someone, i wish Canon or Nikon made an APS-C format mirror-less!

I'm not sure how valid it is either! Derrel explained this recently in another post, he reckoned the white is 90 per cent marketing and 10 per cent actual relevance to heat absorption.

I mean if this theory was that relevant, then surely Nikon, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina would be doing the same thing.

I also suspect that it's mostly marketing, but if the marketing works, who cares if Sony is copying Canon?

I wont try to lie, there really ain't alot of point to the post! Apart from some light hearted reading, I just found it slightly humorous that Sony have decided to actually choose a route Canon have famously trademarked. Everyone associates white lenses with Canon... I just felt Sony may of been more original about it all!

I know they don't care, otherwise they wouldn't of released a NOISY as hell 24mp sensor in their cameras! But hey its 24mp... so it must be good?

There are advantages, but I don't want to go down that path right now. For most people, no. For me 24mp is useful for a specific reason, I'd prefer it be on a full frame sensor, but that's out of my price range. Plus I shoot everything at ISO 200 anyway.

And no. I am not at all attached to Sony. If Canon makes a mirrorless in the next year, i'll happily switch.

I may sound like a Sony Hater, but I respect the NEX line of cameras. It's weird though 'Unpopular'... I thought you were a Nikon User for some strange reason??

Umm, I don't think Sony is copying Canon ... Sony is copying Minolta.

Minolta's high end AF Telephoto lenses were white.
Minolta AF 70-200 F2.8 APO G D SSM 2682-118 lens for Sony Alpha - Minolta camera mount

Now ... the question is, did Minolta copy Canon ?

I'd still be shooting Contax if the N-Digital went anywhere or if I could trust I could get a digital back for the 645 in the future.

The a350 was just my first digital camera. At the time it was one of only a handful that had the articulating panel, in-body IS, and live view at an affordable price. I'm debating if I should just get a solid lens (Rokinon 35/1.4 - all my lenses are full manual) for this camera and get a a850 or a900 later, or save and buy an NEX-7 and use an adapter on my Canon 35/2 Thorite.

To be honest, there are things about the NEX-7 that gives me the willies, and $1200 is a LOT of money for me. But I am afraid that if I buy an expensive-ish A-mount lens, I'll feel stuck with Sony, in one way or another, until my wife finishes law school - and five years+ is a long time with gear you don't like.

Pentax also made some white lenses for their high end lenses.

Some of the newer one where made just to match the white camera bodies.
